Come along to our posy-making workshop to discover floristry techniques to make your own, unique, natural posy bouquet.

Guided by a qualified florist and supported by our volunteers, we will help you craft a homemade posy that you will be proud to give to your mum this Mother’s Day.

Materials foraged, grown in the garden, or purchased will be used, where we will provide you with materials to create your posy, but please bring the flowers and foliage (and any extras) you would like to use and take home.

You will be able to select from any flowers and greenery we have available, but we encourage you to bring your own to support the workshop, and to remember to bring any special items you would like to take home to hold your flower arrangement.

 

Some background on posies

Originally known as a “nose gay” then a “button hole”, in olden days men would put a small bunch of flowers in their button hole and set off to the park in the hope of meeting a young lady or a lover. The small bunch of flowers would be presented to show their affection.

Today that miniature bouquet is known as a posy, and it is often used for special occasions such as being carried by bridesmaids at a wedding, and given as a gift.

Generally it has become the custom to present a small posy to our mums or loved ones on Mothering Sunday.

 

Flowers and foliage to use

We recommend any of the following flowers and foliage for your posy:

– Your flowers of choice from the garden (ideally without the flowers open)

– Unopened spring flowers like tulips and miniature daffodils

– Carnations

– Muscari

– Roses

– Gypsophillia

– Flowering shrubs

– Evergreen foliage like ivy and grasses

– Rosemary

– Lavender
