Latest project developments…
Part Two.
New friends
-
- Some of our volunteers has been very busy raising our profile in the local community. We now have contacts at the The Conservation Volunteers (TCV) “Green Gym”, MK Community Fridge, a local Brownie Guide group, doctors’ surgeries, Shenley Village, and radio station MKFM. With that, our prospects are looking good for future work together with residents from across MK.
-
- We have new friends in Buckingham too. The Buckingham Edible Woodland is a Forest Garden created by volunteers – located in the green area of land behind Waitrose, over the hill, past the houses and near the river.
The group is led by John Mortimer and his partner Ingrid who we managed to catch at the Buckingham Spring Fair for a chat. Given that there’s a lot we can learn from each other, we intend to arrange some visits and share some ideas in the not-too-distant future.

-
- Men in Sheds MK group has agreed to help us with our raised beds, possible shed reinforcement work and pallet furniture in future. The details have still to be finalised, but their woodwork expertise is certainly going to come in very handy when they’re ready to take on our projects.
- A warm welcome to our newest group member, Frances, who has recently joined Westbury as the new caretaker.Frances has kindly offered to share her allotment land at WAC to use as part of our community garden “Planting Up” demo space, so the plot now extends to:
- A square patch of land at the back of the house near the wildflower meadow and hedgerow.
- The old chicken coop allotment area (beside the old tennis courts)

Events
- In addition to the research that’s been done into the history of Westbury Arts Centre (WAC), there have been nature surveys conducted at the Centre to check on some of the unique wildlife (like the long-eared bats and great crested newts) that call WAC home. More details will follow about a possible event for us to learn more about what they find.
- It’s Volunteer Week from 1 – 7 June so we’re in the process of seeing what we can plan to do for it. Please get in touch if you’d like to be involved or have any ideas.
- Don’t forget our permablitz this weekend. We’ll be busy on the plot from 11am – 1pm this Sunday (29 April). We ask that anyone wanting to stay a bit longer, bring some snacks for a lunchtime “Bring & Share”.
- One thing we might consider for future events is the potential foraged food we have growing on our doorsteps. I’m sure we’ll be clearing plenty of nettles and dandelions we can make recipes from this weekend. (More to come on that!)
